Equip yourself for difficult conversations with PalliLEARN

30 October 2025

In an effort to better equip our community with the skills they need to have difficult and important conversations with family, friends and loved ones, Brisbane North PHN has sponsored Palliative Care Queensland to deliver the PalliLEARN Lunchtime Series.

Sessions aim to enhance our community’s awareness and understanding of palliative care, as well as self-care, and how to look after yourself during these challenging times.

Who can attend?

These courses are offered free for those living or working in the North Brisbane and Moreton Bay regions. There are no prerequisites for training or experience within the health or palliative care space to attend.

Why attend?

The way we care for our dying is a significant indicator of the values of our society. Through training, we can create resilience, understanding and capacity within our community, helping us care for our loved ones, families and friends.

How to have conversations about dying and grief

Conversations about dying and grief are important but can be hard.

This 60-minute in-person education course provides practical tips on how to have caring and compassionate conversations with loved ones, colleagues, neighbours or friends about an area of life we often avoid.

Self-care

You can’t pour from an empty cup. Caring for yourself is just as important as caring for others.

This 60-minute online education course highlights the role of self-care and provides ideas and strategies to incorporate self-care in your life.

Talking to children about dying

Children and teenagers experience grief too.

This 60-minute online education course highlights the importance of, and provides tips on, having simple and honest conversations with children and teenagers about serious illness, dying, death and grief.

Palliative caring: Planning in 5 steps

Planning is an essential aspect of palliative caring.

This 60-minute online education course focuses on 5 simple steps to identify an individual’s circle of care and collaboratively work together to plan for that person’s care needs.

Compassion in action: The clinical experience of Ambulance Wish Queensland

This webinar will feature guest speakers Angela Lane, Clinical Nurse Consultant at Metro South Health Services and Karly Claxton, Senior Social Worker at Dove Palliative Care Inpatient Unit and SPARTA telehealth.

Together they will share their unique perspectives and professional insights drawn from their involvement with Ambulance Wish Queensland. Angela and Karly will explore the emotional, clinical and logistical aspects of fulfilling final wishes for Queenslanders living with a life-limiting illness. Their discussion will highlight the impact of the program and offering valuable lessons on compassionate, patient-centred end of life care.

Coping with grief during the holidays

Grief is something we will all experience, yet it’s often one of the hardest conversations to have. Grief can be difficult to navigate, especially around holidays, anniversaries and milestones. That’s why we’re bringing you a special session with Imogen Carn and Sally Douglas, co-founders of Good Mourning, the movement inspiring others to cope when life takes an unexpected turn.

After the devastating loss of their mums just months apart, Sal and Im created Good Mourning to offer the kind of support they wished they had. Today, their grief podcast is one of the most listened-to in the world, blending honesty, humour, and lived experience with expert insights to tackle topics like resilience, mental health, spirituality, and the messy reality of loss.

Join us for an open, compassionate conversation about navigating grief at this busy and emotional time of year.
