Reporting to the Minister for Health and Ambulance Services, the Commissioner performs the role of Chief Executive of the Commission and is responsible for leading the Queensland Mental Health Commission, consisting of approximately 26 permanent staff and 24 temporary positions.
As a statutory position the Commissioner appointment is made by the Governor in Council for a term of not more than five years.
The Commission is an independent statutory body established under the Queensland Mental Health Commission Act 2013 (the Act). The role of the Commission is to drive ongoing reform towards a more integrated, evidence-based, recovery-oriented mental health and alcohol and other drugs system in Queensland.
The Commission is committed to improving the mental health and wellbeing of all Queenslanders and is focused on increasing knowledge, understanding and information sharing through partnerships, public reports and community awareness activities. The Commission works closely with the community, government, and industry in areas including health, employment, education, housing and justice.
The Commission is supported by a Queensland Mental Health and Drug Advisory Council that provides advice and guidance on mental health and substance misuse issues and makes recommendations on how the Commission fulfils its functions.
