Clinical trial for depressive symptoms in people with Bipolar Disorder or Depression

Deakin University is currently seeking QLD participants for two double-blind RCT’s assessing whether Candesartan improves depressive symptoms in people with either Major Depressive Disorder or Bipolar Disorder. Participation involves a screening process, then six appointments over 16 weeks. Appointments can either be in-person (Toowong Specialist Clinic, in Brisbane), or via Telehealth (if participants are able to attend a QML local to them).
The trial is overseen by Professor Michael Berk at Deakin University. Principal Investigators for QLD participants are Dr Jon-Paul Khoo and Dr Bradley Matthews at Toowong Specialist Clinic.
Inclusion criteria:
- adults (18+) who have a diagnosis of either MDD or Bipolar Disorder, who are currently experiencing a moderate to severe episode of depression
- not diagnosed with a psychotic disorder or current substance use disorder (last 3 months)
- medication stable for at least two weeks (can make changes once in trial)
- not pregnant/breastfeeding/planning to do so whilst on the trial
- not currently having TMS/ECT
- not taking contraindicated medications (including ACE inhibitors, AT1R blockers, diuretics, spironolactone, or daily NSAIDs)
- Systolic BP >110mmHg.
Safety blood tests are taken throughout the trial - results are copied to nominated GP/psychiatrist, but there is no expectation of additional input from treating physician.
