Healthy Bones Action Week is an annual initiative that highlights the importance of building and maintaining strong bones.

This week endorses advantageous nutritional and lifestyle habits, like ensuring sufficient calcium and vitamin D intake and regular exercise, to reduce the risk of low bone mineral density and osteoporosis.

Osteoporosis is a condition where bones lose calcium and other minerals causing them to become fragile, and can lead to a higher risk and incidence of fractures.

In general practice, early detection can prevent a first fracture. For patients who have already experienced a fracture, investigation and initiation of osteoporosis medication is crucial to reduce the high risk of subsequent fractures.

Brisbane North PHN’s Primary Care team is working to upskill general practices in executing health assessments, where health risk factors, including bone health, can be reviewed. We provide educational activities for healthcare providers through webinars, continuous quality improvement activities, engagement visits and resources.

Our Engagement Officer Tammy Archdall is pictured with Michaela, Sharon, Rachel and Sinae from Redcliffe Beach Clinic who have delivered great health outcomes for their patients after participating in this quality improvement activity.

Our Primary Care Team is committed to working with general practices to support good health and healthy lifestyles – and bones – to reduce risk factors for patients in our region.
