Brisbane North PHN acknowledges the impact of the Voice to Parliament referendum outcome and stands in solidarity with First Nations people in our communities and across Australia at this time.
As part of our work striving to deliver better health outcomes for the people in our region, the PHN deeply understands the need for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander self-determination in regard to the health disadvantages they face. We mustn’t lose focus on the need to close the gap in health outcomes; it is critical that our sustained efforts and advocacy for parity of health outcomes and life expectancy for First Nations people continues.
As an organisation we remain committed to our journey towards reconciliation and health equity.
We acknowledge the call from Indigenous leaders for a week of silence and reflection, after which we encourage open and respectful conversations around “what’s next?”. We pay respect to the challenge this time will bring to our First Nations people, all who support them, and affected staff and stakeholders.
The National Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation and the Australian Indigenous HealthInfoNet have launched an online portal with resources to support and reduce social and emotional harms to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in the post-referendum period.
We acknowledge the Traditional Custodians within our region: the Jagera, Turrbal, Gubbi Gubbi, Waka Waka and the Ningy Ningy peoples of where we meet, work and learn. Brisbane North PHN is committed to reconciliation. Our vision for reconciliation is where the stories of our First Nations’ people are heard and shared, and networks are formed.
