National Authentication Service for Health (NASH) Certificates are being upgraded and will transition from SHA-1 (secure hash algorithm 1) to SHA-2.
This means all general practices, specialists and pharmacies must update their NASH certificates by 13 March 2022, to avoid disruption to these systems and patient care.
What is NASH?
The National Authentication Service for Health was introduced in 2012, as a Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) solution used to authenticate and securely access digital health services, digitally sign documents and other transactions, and encrypt health information for secure exchange.
NASH certificates provide the security for your practice to access national digital systems such as:
All SHA-1 NASH Certificates expire on the 13 March 2022. SHA-2 NASH certificates will provide enhanced security protection for healthcare information.
Without a current or up to date NASH certificate the above services may not be available to you and any potential payments associated with them (e.g. ePIP).
What you need to do:
1. request or renew a NASH PKI certificate - instructions are on the Australian Digital Health Agency website.
2. download the NASH certificate
3. install into your practice software. You may need assistance from the software vendor or your IT support.
