In less than 3 months, from 1 July 2022, the National Cervical Screening Program (NCSP) will expand screening test options, offering self-collection as a choice to all people participating in cervical screening.
What does this mean for general practice?
The change means from 1 July 2022 all women and people with a cervix aged 25-74 years will have the choice to screen using:
Patients will access both options via a general practice.
What are the benefits for my patients?
Self-collection allows eligible patients to have the option to take their own vaginal sample for HPV testing, removing a significant barrier to participation. This option may also improve general screening participation.
Is the self-collected sample accurate?
Screening using a self-collected vaginal sample has equivalent sensitivity when compared to a clinician collected cervical sample. A summary of the evidence can be found here.
