Primary care teams are fundamental to the delivery of at-home palliative care.
With 32 palliative care projects available to people in North Brisbane and Moreton Bay, it is challenging for professionals to keep across the service and support options available.
“Palliative care may not be an area of care that many GPs are regularly exposed to, reducing their skills and confidence,” said Dr Kylie Norris, General Practice Liaison Officer at Brisbane North PHN and Metro North Health.
Having an awareness of local support services and their referral pathways will assist the GP in providing ongoing care and improving the patient and family experience.
Dr Norris is the MC for the upcoming Palliative Care Evening for Primary Care 2024 which will be held on Wednesday 20 March 2024 at Victoria Park.
The program includes an education session over a seated meal, networking time, and an exhibition of featured local services and supports.
The education session will be led by Dr Greg Parker, Director of PallConsult , drawing on his expertise in palliative care practice, education, research, and service development. Dr Parker will share a case study to impart practical guidance for supporting people in palliative care through the lens of general practice.
Held during National Advance Care Planning Week, this event aims to raise awareness and build capacity of our primary care workforce to connect with palliative care services and supports available across our region.
The inaugural Palliative Care Evening for Primary Care was well received in 2023 with 95 per cent of participants responding they would recommend the event to their colleagues.
This is a professional development event for primary care workers living or working across North Brisbane and Moreton Bay, supported by funding from the Department of Health and Aged Care under the Greater Choice for At Home Palliative Care measure.
