Working With Survivors of Childhood Sexual Abuse

Hosted by Existential practice

This is a half-day workshop for mental health professionals supporting adults who experienced sexual abuse in childhood. This workshop is aimed at providing an opportunity to connect, and discuss challenges of childhood sexual abuse (CSA) treatment, as well as offer practical solutions for responding to most common client presentations and concerns that arise in a clinical setting. An experienced trauma-informed psychotherapist will guide you through thought evoking case studies and intervention examples that can enhance your professional skills in the areas of CSA disclosures, trauma symptoms and frequently encountered barriers to client engagement and recovery.

Learning Objectives:

  • develop a practical understanding of different ways CSA can present in treatment, including covert and ambiguous disclosure. Discuss how to manage disclosures therapeutically
  • identify key approaches to assessment and treatment of CSA, when memories are limited and/or inaccessible to the client
  • learn how you can build confidence in supporting clients to manage day-to-day CSA trauma symptoms, ensuring clients can maintain daily functioning, such as employment, relationships and parenting responsibilities, while working with their CSA history in therapy
  • discuss case scenarios to address transference, complex feelings, and avoidance that commonly present during therapeutic work with CSA
  • participate in interactive experiences to connect with like-minded practitioners to discuss additional supports for the survivors, such as Victim services, SAMSN, Redress Scheme, etc.
